The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has received a technical team from the World Bank Group as part of efforts to improve disaster preparedness and response across Nigeria.
The visit took place on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to a statement shared on NEMA’s official X page, the delegation was led by Francis Nkoka, while the agency’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, received the team.
In an essential effort to enhance disaster preparedness across Nigeria, a dedicated team from the World Bank recently made an important visit to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). This collaboration aims to strengthen the existing frameworks and systems that are crucial for effective disaster response and management.
The meeting focused on reviewing ongoing collaborations and exploring ways to strengthen disaster risk management, especially in helping communities better prepare for emergencies.
“The engagement reaffirmed the shared commitment to strengthening disaster risk management systems and enhancing the country’s capacity to effectively prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters,” the statement said.
The primary objective of the World Bank's visit was to assess the current disaster preparedness strategies deployed by NEMA and identify areas that require improvement. By engaging directly with officials and stakeholders, the team sought to understand the specific challenges faced in the realm of disaster management. This direct dialogue is expected to foster a mutual understanding and pave the way for tailored support and resources from the World Bank.
The importance of building resilience in the face of disasters is paramount for Nigeria, a country frequently impacted by various natural calamities, including floods and droughts. The partnership with the World Bank signifies a larger commitment to not only respond to these challenges but to proactively mitigate their effects. By implementing robust systems and policies, NEMA, with the assistance of the World Bank, aims to equip communities across Nigeria with the tools needed to prepare for and respond to disasters effectively.
As the World Bank team concluded their visit, the emphasis on collaboration and support was clear. Their involvement signals a strengthening of relations between international bodies and Nigerian institutions dedicated to disaster management. This meeting could mark a significant step towards achieving a more resilient Nigeria, ready to face both current and future challenges. Ensuring preparedness and resilience should remain a collective priority as Nigeria continues on its path of development.
